Instructional Planning Activity Types Chart

Make sure you have read the article for this week by Harris and Hofer! For this assignment you will think about an activity that you do in your class and consider some technologies that may support that activity in a different way based on your TPACK understanding. Some examples are provided below in different styles, you can decide how you will enter your contribution to the knowledge being constructed in the chart!

Click on the EDIT THIS PAGE to get started...remember to click SAVE when you are finished! Revist this page to see what others have contributed!
If all the rows have been used, click in the last row and then click on the table icon (newtableicon.jpg). Then, choose Row, Add Row, Add below to add another row for your entry.

Brief Description
Possible Technologies
Cheryl Ward
Listen to Audio
Students listen to recordings of speeches, music, radio broadcasts, oral histories, and lectures; digital or non-digital
Podcasts (“Great Speeches in History,” etc.), Audacity, Garageband, Odeo, Evoca, Podcast People
Teacher
Peer Feedback
In my class students give each other peer feedback on a writing project, but it would be great to do this electronically.
I may consider a wiki where they would post their writing and then others could comment sort of non private? Could use Google Docs and peers could comment using the comment option and it would be more private.

Conduct an Interview
In my class, our students interview African Americans and write a "class book" about the person's story and the contributions to our community
I would love to use Movie Maker to improve the projects. One of the challenges I face is that the students conduct the interview but forget what the person said soon afterwords. I would like to use a wiki where the kids could somehow comment on each others writing. Maybe I could have the students post and others could comment about how the writing could be improved.

Complete a table/chart
Students fill in teacher created charts and tables or ceate their own using traditional ways or using digital tools
I would like students to mave away from the hand drawn charts and tables that I usually have them create. I wouls like to have them create tables of data with excel and then use the data to create different types of graphs.
Christine Boyd
Create a bottle rocket
Students need to create a bottle rocket that can stay in the air for 7 seconds. Based on their information/journal another group needs to be able to repeat the design.
I would also like to use Movie Maker to enhance the bottle rocket project. In addition to writing their design they can create a how to video to enhance their project.
Amy Masterson
Create a photo essay over Vietnam Wes
Students are required to read the book Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers in which students will create a photo essay (including quotes) that depicts what life was like for a soldier during the Vietnam War.
This project will require students to use Movie Maker in order to enhance the photo essay. Students can also incorporate music from the time era to demonstrate the dislike felt by the citizens and veterans.

endangered species
research
have students report on an endangered species - -
United States species
incorporate music -garageband and have students assess each others reports
Amy Baxter
group discussion
Students contribute to a whole-class discussion of a reading selection/text - I've done this before as a "silent" discussion where questions are posted on wall and students move from one to another adding ideas and commenting on others' thoughts - now to put a tech twist on this!
have questions posted in wiki pages with students responding to them from netbooks in class, then looking at them using SmartBoard/projector as part of wrap-up group discussion

Looking at other ideas, I see a few people have mentioned garageband ... not sure what this is?? It is an Apple program loaded on Macs. Go to this site and see what all it can do: http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/

Create geometrical pictures
Students will create virtual images of different angles and polygons and ask other students to identify each. Students can also create a virtual image of a circle and identify its parts (radius, diameter, chord, center, circumference, area) with various colors.
paint and/or photoshop, www.geogebra.com
Lisa Casto
Rewrite part of a story
Student were asked to write part of Anne Frank's story from a different point of view, like the point of view of the thief that broke in. They then had to read their play to the class.
Instead of students just reading their portion of the play to the class, students could act out the story and make a video with Movie Maker.
Shane Hancock
Research Report/Science Fair Project
Students have to ask a testable question, research their topic, then go through the steps of the scientific method to test that question. Finally, students must present their findings at a science fair using poster/display boards.
Instead of presenting their findings using a display board, students could use movie maker, imovie, photostory, or some other video/photo editing software to present their findings in video format. It would be more meaningful for the audience because the students could record some of their experiment and actually show video clips of what they did as well as their results... so the audience can see "first-hand" what happened in the experiment rather than simply reading the procedures on a display board. Also, the presentation could then be shared through various online mediums like YouTube.com, motionbox.com, TeacherTube.com and others. Presentations could even be embedded on blogs and in wikis to share the information learned with the larger world.

Assessment
Tool
Students will have to listen to different political music generes based societal movements. Students will also search and incorporate pictures to capture periods in time.
Student will use garage band, voicethread, and/or movie maker to create an illustration of the significant time period studied throughout the academic year. Students will post work to team Moodle and will share presentations in lecture hall as peers learn from peers.

Do a Presentation

Students share their understanding with others; oral or multimedia approach; synchronous or asynchronous
My students usually are limited to PowerPoint, movieMaker and still images. It would be nice to use other means also.
Kathy Yocum
Share info when working in a group both individually and with group
Students "free write" at the beginning explaining what they know about the topic and then they record how their understandings are affected/changed as they research the topic. Students also share the info they find and share ideas with their team members.
I had thought to have students keep a learning log in a wiki but I am thinking now that they could do this in Voicethread. I had thought to have the team collaborate and share the info they find in a blog but this could also be done in Voicethread.
Andrea White
Create a newspaper page relevant to a point in time
While working in small groups, students uncover primary source documents, which are then used to create a newpaper page full of articles (based on information discovered) and period photos/drawings.
For this activity students will be permitted to use Digital History and digital archives to help gather data, Word to create the articles and google pages to create the newspage.
Carolyn Piergallini
Research their family history and create a presentation of their choice
Students will work individually to gather photos, family history and information to be worked into a visual presentation for Language Arts along with a written story/script.
Students could use Movie Maker, Power Point, Podcast, I Movie or even Voicethread, and Word for their written script
Jerad Call
Chapter Review
Students will work in small groups to create a digital presentation reviewing a chapter or time period.
Students could use PowerPoint, Movie Maker, and/or Audacity. The internet could be used to add photos, maps, etc.

Senior Presentations
Students must interview professional in their chosen career field. Just one one many activities for Senior Presentations.
So many areas of technology can be used for this activity. I had suggested to a student to video tape the establishment first with a narration to explain the who, what, when, etc., and to then audio tape the actual interview and to upload both of the activities into their presentation.
